Mixed Hot Water Capacity Calculator

Usable gallons at shower temperature from a hot tank: the per-gallon split, shower minutes, the equivalent tank at 120 F and the scald screen.

Inputs

Tank and temperatures

Nominal tank gallons.

The temperature on the tank dial. Storing above 120 F adds usable gallons through the mixing valve; water near 140 F scalds in seconds.

Shower temperatures commonly sit near 100-105 F. Automatic compensating shower valves are rated for up to 120 F at the outlet (ASSE 1016).

Groundwater temperature. Cold-season water runs 37-45 F in the northern states, near 50 F in the mid-Atlantic and 65-75 F in the Deep South.

Shower being fed

Used only to turn usable gallons into shower minutes. Showerheads made after 1 Jan 1994 are capped at 2.5 gpm at 80 psi (10 CFR 430.32(p)).

What to check

  • Tank volume and the storage temperature on the dial
  • The temperature you want at the fixture and the incoming cold water temperature
  • Whether an ASSE 1017 thermostatic mixing valve is fitted
